NPS Awarded $1.2 Million Grant

Norfolk Public Schools is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $1.2 million 21st Century Learning Community Grant to provide high quality after school programs for our Middle School and Junior High students beginning in the Fall of 2014.

We will have two school-based sites (at the Middle School and Junior High School) and one off-campus, satellite location at The Zone. The Middle School and Junior High sites will be based around a club theme, with an emphasis on career readiness and academic skills, while The Zone will continue its focus on student empowerment through lessons that develop leadership skills. All three sites will provide diverse opportunities for our youth to grow intellectually, culturally, physically, socially and emotionally. Activities and services will work to meet the needs of the whole child by offering nutritious snacks, assisting students academically and socially, building character, and supporting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.

The program will serve 290 students and will operate Monday through Friday during the school year from the time school dismisses to 6:00pm. Limited programming will also be available during the summer.

Initial partners in this program include: Norfolk Public Schools, the United Way, the City of Norfolk, UNL Extension Office and 4-H Youth Development Program, The Zone, the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, the Norfolk Arts Center, Northeast Community College, the YMCA, the Probation Office, Norfolk Iron & Metal Company, Norfolk FFA, the Norfolk Area Community Foundation, and Daycos.

Thanks to Mike Hart, JH Principal; Jen Robinson, MS Principal; Julee Pfeil, Zone Director and Kim Kwapnioski, Norfolk Visitor's Bureau for your work in securing this funding.
